- Brief Bio:
- I currently serve as an Assistant Director for the American Samoa Department of Education, heading the Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability. With the majority of our children entering school as English Language Learners, we are challenged with helping them develop proficiency in English, while maintaining their Samoan culture and language. It is through working with our school-community and PREL that we are presently engaged in reviewing our Content and English Language Proficiency Standards, which includes embedding climate change issues into our standards.
With the recent tsunami of September 29, 2009 which took the lives of nearly 200 people on the Samoan and Tongan islands, it has brought to the forefront that climate change is not merely someone else’s problem; it is a worldwide issue that significantly impacts our Pacific islands as well. Our community recognizes that it was public awareness through the schools and village leaders that prevented the tsunami from taking additional lives. In some villages, our children informed their elders to move to higher grounds (and ultimately saved their lives) because they had been taught the warning signs of a tsunami. Cyclones and tropical storms, sea level rising, and erosion are some of the other major issues affecting our islands. Thus, we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with PREL as well as local and international agencies to promote climate change education for our people in American Samoa.
